What Are Ten (10) Basic Things That All Computers Users Should Know and Typically Don't?

This list might be a bit basic to some of your tastes, but let me know and I'll add a few lesser known facts as well.

1) When it comes to Windows, almost anything can be solved via a registry hack/fix.

2) Most applications don't need to be installed They can simply be copied, as long as some registry settings are taken care of.

3) Most Mail providers go through your emails to come up with ads that are relevant to you. Like an email from your mother about a recipe with eggs will probably get you adverts from cooking related websites.

4) When you send files to the Recycle Bin, they're compressed and the file handles (the links on the File Allocation Tables) are changed. They can usually be undone with no consequence. On a similar note, any deleted file on your computer will still physically remain on your hard drive. When you delete a file , you're essentially removing the links from the file system so that they system thinks the file doesn't exist anymore. Its still there, on your hard drive. You're computer is now free to fill that empty space by overwriting it with new information. It's possible to extract those bits of data assemble them back into files. By the way, this is how file recovery software works.

5) Compression is a technique with exponentially diminishing returns. Also, some software, if not built for the file type you're trying to compress, will actually increase the size of the file rather than decrease it. A good example is using Winrar to compress Video files. It's not built for that. The file compressed gets encapsulated by the Winrar format and may end up larger than its original size. If you want to compress videos or audio files, check their relevant software.

6) 64 bit computers are actually more resilient to viruses and malware. Most of the viruses written for Windows were during the age of 32 bit computers. Viruses, like all other computer programs, must be compatible with the OS and the Hardware they intend to run on. Most 32 bit viruses have trouble running on a 64 bit platform.

7) The front USB ports on computers typically provide lower power than the rear UDB ports. While it's fine to use them fro connecting Flash drives, mice and/or keyboards, they probably wil not support USB Hard drives.

8) An antivirus that hasn't been updated is just marginally better off than a system without an antivirus.

9) You can hide all windows, revealing only what's on the computer desktop, with one keystroke: hit the Windows key and "D" simultaneously in Windows, or press F11 on Macs (on recent Mac laptops, Command+F3; Command is the key with the cloverleaf logo). That's great when you want examine or delete something you've just downloaded to the desktop, for example. Press the keystroke again to return to what you were doing.

10) Backup software is surprisingly easy to use. Most modern backup softwares run in the background, backing up everything almost as soon as its created, saving you a tonne of headache. For Windows, there are loads of softwares, but for the Mac, go with the system provided backup solution, Time Machine.
