How Do You Handle Your Pet's Fur All Over The House

I have about 250 lbs of dog lounging on my couch as I write this. The cat is indignant because I just pushed him down so I can see the monitor. I feels ya.

Over the years, I replaced all my carpet with hard floors. The problem was not hair on the floor as much as the dogs rubbing dirt into the carpets, so now I have some nice, machine washable rugs on top of a floor I put in by myself. It only takes about an afternoon to do a room and the result is gorgeous. The product I used was called Allure (by Traffic Master) here's a video that shows how to do it.

To clean the floors I got a broom with one of those stand up handheld dust bin.

The kind of rubber gloves you use for dishwashing will wipe hair right off couches. If the hair is really stubborn - like in your car, get the rubber glove damp.

To reduce hair overall I use a "furminator" shedding tool. It's a bit pricey and if your pet has mats you need to get them removed by a professional groomer before you use it. Even with short haired dogs, it's amazing how much loose hair this thing dislodges. The way I see it, every one of those hairs will not end up rolling around like tumbleweeds under my couch.

Finally, although you didn't ask - here is a non-toxic, life hack to get rid of fleas. Take some plain table salt (not iodized) and whirl it in a blender until it is the texture of talcum powder. Put on a painter's mask and get the animals and kids outside (you don't want them inhaling big lungfuls of this). Use a flour sifter or a hand held strainer, dust this stuff into all the places fleas breed: under beds, between couch cushions in the tiny cracks in that cool flooring you installed, etc. Wait 72 hours and then vacuum. Not only will you get rid of fleas but any bugs (like ants for example) that crawl close to the ground will suck the ground salt up into their pores and dehydrate.
