How To Travel Safely

Life is a risk! You manage that risk day by day even now. You go to work by public transport and you put your life in the hands of the driver. You go out to lunch and you run the risk that a waiter will spill hot soup on you and burn your skin.

So traveling, whether in a group, a family, or on your own is about managing risk.

My first paragraph - have you ever been in a public transport crash and suffered badly? Have you had hot soup spilled on and gained a permanent scar? I hope not. In 65 years it's never happened to me. Risk is manageable, you need a little experience but mainly common sense.

Even if you travel solo you will meet other people. Sometimes you may even travel with one, or more, of the people you meet for a few days. I've done it and I know one of my sons has as well. How will you meet other people? You'll stay in hostels. There is the are some hostels which are in association of providers in many countries. They have similar standards and I've never felt unsafe in one. Then there are the independent hostels they're usually good but there are fewer checks on them. That said I don't know anyone who has had a problem in an independent; again good sense goes a long way.

I think it's also worth pointing out that not everyone travels alone. It's quite OK to go with a friend. Here's another thing, you don't have to go enormous distances or for years. I started with a group of friends here in the UK going for weekends and staying within the UK. Later we took 1 week holidays. We didn't always keep in a group all day. Sometimes some would explore a castle whilst others climbed a hill (we don't really have mountains, at least not really big ones). We stayed in Youth Hostels (the YHA is the English and Welsh affiliate of the IYHF)

As time goes on you try other things. Last year (not for the first time) I went off to the USA for a month on my own (I wanted to attend some conventions) and then my wife flew out to join me and we spent a further month in a different part of the USA. Earlier in the year we spent 2 weeks traveling up to the north of England (one of our sons lives there) and then after we had visited with him for a few days we stayed in the area and explored. We drove and stayed in a mixture of hotels and bed and breakfasts as well as with our son.

Start small, go further and see if you like it. Some people don't and that's OK as well.
